There is something scary and unnerving about this photo. I try to locate it geographically but I can't do that, it wants to remain psychological, mythic. All I can think of is the last scene in Hitchcock's The Birds. All is calm, but there is menace. I want to know what happens next, do I get out of here? Is it the end of something? Can I go back? All your photos have narrative, this one dramatic.
Actually it feels very much like where I just spent the week, on Tomales Bay at Point Reyes... and it reminds me of the moment I wasn't sure I'd made the right choice at an unmarked trail crossing - would I get back to the car and back to the house in the expected time, or was I heading out 6 uninterrupted miles to shell beach? (The Birds was filmed not far from here, a little bit further north at Bodega Bay)
